In 1939, in a piece in La Revolución Nacional desde la Universidad. Cursillo de orientación nacionalsindicalista, José Pérez de Barradas, director of the Museum of Prehistory in Madrid, wrote that “we Spanish are not ethnically European. Thanks to God, Africa begins in the Pyrenees [the phrase is famous and Dumas]; we are neither Alpines nor Indo-Germans, but Berbers or Hamites.”
The case of the Spanish law prof turfed off a plane by passengers who thought he looked too much like Osama (thanks Margaret Marks) suggests that we have moved on and that it is now Islam that begins at the Pyrenees, or at least in the minds of some Germans.
