Riding Indian

Walking along a pavement just now with pedestrians coming the way, a cyclist overtook them, despite clearly seeing what the result would be. Just before he drove into me and I twatted him over the head with a wine box he said, “Riding Indian.” Is this a confused reference to Indian file, single file?
