Excerpt

Feb. 1. This day the Mayor, the High Sheriff of the county, and our excellent Recorder, received the sacrament in the parish church in respect of their new offices; as also my cousin Kirshaw’s black, the first baptised negro that ever received the sacrament in these parts, that good family having taken much pains to instruct him in the Christian religion.

To facilitate reading, the spelling and punctuation of elderly excerpts have generally been modernised, and distracting excision scars concealed. My selections, translations, and editions are copyright.
