Whirled from the precincts of the cheerful day,
Down the deep abyss was his mortal clay.
We hope his spirit winged its way above,
To sing the praises of his Redeemer’s love.

In memory of Joseph Batty of Mortonley, who was accidentally precipitated into a coalpit 75 yards deep, 6th December, 1828, aged 32.
Whirl’d from the precincts of the cheerful day,
Down the deep abyss was his mortal clay.
We hope his spirit winged its way above,
