Should be some good Spanish bars in Walworth…

This fascinating map by Oliver O’Brien shows the most popularly spoken language after English for each London ward. The data is from 2011 and in some areas will have changed considerably – Romanian fondness for the northern end of the Piccadilly Line has certainly grown. I hoped the Nepalese would have shrunk from tunnels, but it is not so. I think English is still the first language in all wards, although obviously in places like Punjabi Southall and Gujarati Wembley it is now a minority language.

It’s a shame there isn’t (afaik) a Barcelona equivalent. I think the data is still out there, though, as in London, a considerable number of people are not counted, and, unlike London, one never knows how far the data presented has been influenced by the political agenda.
