Past of lead: lead

Back in 2000, Britain lead the way in medical research… But the EU Clinical Trials Directive, whose regulations came into effect in 2004, put an end to much of this vital medical research.

Everyone and his monkey on my farm seems to have abandoned led – and, after all, the past of read isn’t red (perhaps the past is dead) – so maybe it shouldn’t annoy me.
