Socking it away

Textile trend research as a means of analysing the black economy.

You know where this is going.

The other day I found a sock containing 800DM, the fruit of some obscure musical engagement 15 years ago, and a friend told me the story of a rather more successful friend. This gent managed to avoid falling in the classic Spanish trap of trying to get rich by getting a job and now manages his considerable finances using socks: a tot-sock for the gardener, a tennis sock for the wife, something larger for the wastrel son, a pair of tights for the mistress, and so on.

Ugandan women keep their money in bras, the men in their socks, but is this generalised closer to home? Does a rise in sock imports indicate a shift to black? If the market share of small sizes increases, are we looking at a reduction in social trust and an increase in short-termism? Is a surge in flameproof a reliable predictor of revolution?
