The Catalan government is infighting as to whether it’s better to punish drivers for alcohol consumption, for which a zero tolerance proposal has been tabled, or for excessive speed, which it is cunningly assumed would save jobs in the wine industry. Being an experienced wheelman and having suffered two completely avoidable shunts and a number of near misses since I started this blog, I’m quite clear that it should be the former. Drunks drive terribly, even at low speeds; if you stop them getting behind the wheel, they’ll still get drunk, the taxi industry will boom, and cycling will get a whole lot better. That sounds like good politics to me.
