A third-generation Barcelona estate agent will generally have added a law degree at the University of Barcelona to 15-odd years of school, all without necessarily mastering basic standard Spanish. Catalan linguistic protectionism means it’s extraordinarily unusual to find teachers from Madrid working in Barcelona though quite common to find the reverse – even Valladolid isn’t safe. A considerable proportion of the state-wide political establishment is clearly prepared to go along with regional nationalist lies re the linguistic skills of the schoolchildren at their mercy, but I wonder how long it will be before Spanish tests are introduced for northeastern applicants for public sector jobs in other parts of the country.
