From a considerable collection of private missives detailing court life sent by the 17th century writer Jerónimo de Barrionuevo to the dean of Zaragoza:
Why is small game counted in pairs? If there were 1,000 pig tongues, what happened to the missing 3,000 feet? What comes after hubris?
It is quite extraordinary that JdeB’s quite extraordinary avisos are not better known. I haven’t read any of his (pornographic) poetry or theatre plays, but I imagine they would not be without their interest.
